What is the DAO?

DAO is the primary enzyme involved in the metabolism of ingested histamine. It is primarily located in the intestinal epithelium, where it degrades dietary histamine, preventing it from entering the bloodstream.

What is histamine?

Histamine is a vital molecule, a transmitter that belongs to the so-called biogenic amines and is naturally present in many foods, as well as within our cells. Normally, the ingestion of histamine from food does not cause any problems, as it is rapidly processed and metabolized by the enzyme Diamine Oxidase (DAO).

What is DAO deficiency?

DAO deficiency occurs when the metabolizing enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) is deficient, or when there is an imbalance between the histamine ingested in food and the enzyme’s ability to metabolize it. As a result, histamine is not sufficiently metabolized or broken down, passing into the bloodstream and triggering various symptoms.

How does DAOfood® Veg work?

The Diamine Oxidase (DAO) in DAOfood® Veg supplements the body’s own enzyme responsible for metabolizing histamine. Taking one DAOfood® Veg tablet before each meal increases the amount of DAO in the small intestine and, therefore, the ability to break down histamine. This accelerates the digestive tract’s processing of the histamine present in food, which triggers symptoms.

How to take Daofood vegan?

Take one tablet with a little water 20 minutes before main meals (3 times a day). DAOfood®Veg tablets have a gastro-resistant coating that prevents the release of the enzyme Diamine Oxidase in the stomach, but rather in a delayed manner in the small intestine, where it degrades histamine ingested in the diet. Therefore, the tablets should be taken whole, without chewing, splitting, or breaking them before ingestion.

Storage conditions

DAOfood® contains Diamino Oxidase (DAO), a thermolabile (temperature-sensitive) enzyme and is recommended to be stored in the refrigerator.

Composition of Daofood vegan

Bulking agents: microcrystalline cellulose and hydroxypropylcellulose; dehydrated pea sprout powder (Pisum sativum) with 7% diamine oxidase (DAO); coating agent: ethylcellulose; potato starch; stabilizers: sodium alginate and magnesium salts of fatty acids; medium-chain triglycerides; coating agent: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose; stabilizers: oleic acid and stearic acid.

Per 1 tablet: Dehydrated powder of pea sprouts (Pisum sativum) 4.2 mg, Diamine Oxidase (DAO) 0.3 mg.
