Fucus is a brown seaweed from rocky coasts, belonging to the Fucaceae family, which owes its name to the presence of gas vesicles in its morphology. The active part of the seaweed is the perennial stems, which contain mucilaginous polysaccharides and mineral salts. It is a remineralizing species, the most important mineral, which gives medicinal meaning to the seaweed, being iodine.

Traditionally, fucus has been used as a metabolic activator thanks to the presence of iodine (promoting weight loss by increasing calorie burning). It has also been shown to have a satiating effect due to the inhibition of -amylase and -glucosidase.
