Red Rice Yeast is made from the fermentation of rice by a yeast known as Monascus purpureus. It provides several monacolins, the main one, monacolin K. It can also contain isoflavones, monounsaturated fats and sterols. Some of these naturally-occurring substances are similar (and in some cases identical) to “statins”, synthetic medicines that are used to control blood cholesterol levels and whose activity is focused on blocking the production of endogenous cholesterol.

Both Red Yeast Rice and Statins reduce the levels of Coenzyme Q-10 as a side effect of its hypocholesterolemic activity, so in chronic or prolonged treatments it is recommended to consume the two supplements together.
