Mammals produce lactoferrin, a non-heme iron-binding monomeric glycoprotein considered as a primary defense factor and essential component of innate immunity.

The iron-binding capacity of lactoferrin is related to the inhibition of microbial growth, mucosal infections, modulation of motility, and formation of biofilms of pathogenic bacteria.
