Mangosteen is a fruit native to the tropics. It grows in a hot, humid climate, which causes it to develop defense mechanisms against these extreme conditions, generating numerous bioactive substances, including xanthones.

Xanthones are phytonutrients found mainly in the peel and pericarp of the mangosteen. Chemically, they are molecules that have a six-carbon conjugated ring with multiple double carbon bonds, making them very stable molecules.

Up to 200 different xanthones have been discovered in nature, however no plant has more than 8 xanthones among its active ingredients except magostan which has more than 40 xanthones.

Xanthones are considered the most powerful antioxidant molecules and together with the rest of the active ingredients in mangosteen (polysaccharides, quinones, stilbenes, catechins) make its juice useful in numerous situations:
