DHA in the development and maintenance of human intellectual and visual function

Focused on the ocular and neurological area, we have docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the most polyunsaturated of the fatty acids of the Omega-3 family, with 22 carbons and 6 double bonds, which makes up about 40% of the fatty acids present in the membranes of cortical neurons and retinal photoreceptors. Their double bonds give them fluidity, flexibility and permeability, to speed up synaptic connectivity and cell signaling.

Antioxidant action of DHA in infertility, intense exercise and antiviral protection

The greater presence of DHA in the cell membrane, due to a higher dietary consumption, activates the synthesis mechanisms of intracellular glutathione (GSH), which makes the cells highly protected against oxidation. GSH is a small protein produced by mammalian cells that acts as an electron donor antioxidant; removes oxygenated free radicals that form in the electronic transport chain during cellular respiration

DHA is easily retroconverted into Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), also omega-3, and its oxidized metabolic derivatives, the E3 eicosanoids, prostaglandins and thromboxanes, which provide very healthy antiplatelet properties.

DHA and eye disease

That is why in the ocular area, forcing the contribution of DHA is fully justified, to reduce the intense oxidative stress present in most ocular ailments: among others, primary and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, degeneration age-related macular disease, meibomian glandular dysfunction and dry eye, uveitis, thyroid ophthalmopathy. We have been able to verify that the joint administration of lutein with DHA significantly increases the optical density of the macular pigment, compared to the administration of lutein alone.

How to take Omega 3?

It is recommended to take 1 to 4 capsules a day, preferably during meals with a glass of water.
